Communities:
In social studies, the students are learning about communities and their attributes. We will study four different types of communities before each team creates a brand new community.
Flash Cards:
I highly suggest each student acquire their own set of multiplication flash cards. This will be so helpful to them here in the classroom.
Addition/Subtraction:
The students are currently learning to add and subtract within 1,000. The students have been very successful with addition with regrouping. However, we are still practicing subtraction with regrouping. Please practice this skill at home to ensure mastery by our math test next Friday.
Book Reports:
The students received their first book report book today in reading groups. The students will be reading this book at school and at home. Here at school they will be creating a slideshow book report on Google with their reading group. This slide show will count as their graded work for this book.

Email Fridays:
On Fridays, the students are participating in an activity called Email Fridays for writing. During our writing times, the students will work on their letter writing skills by writing to students in their class and Mrs. Dieker. I can already tell that this will be their favorite writing day each week.

Reading Binders:
Your child has a weekly reading log that I will write on every day at school with the two tasks they are suppose to complete each day. I choose one task and let the students pick the second task. The task I choose is a task we will work on during reading groups. For example, today the task I choose was the Central Message Chart on "So Say the Little Monkeys". All of the students finished this task during reading groups, so that is one less task at home. Most of the students chose a poem as their task pick, so they will need to read this tonight at home and fill in the four new words on their weekly reading log (or you can write the words he/she says in.) You can sign next to the date in the box that has the task written for that day.
Any questions about the reading binder, please feel free to email me or call.

New Reading Log
This week the students are trying out a new reading log for their chapter books/text. The reason for the change is to make their nightly reading as productive as possible. I will write in the date and title of the book or chapter they are to read. (I may write the amount of minutes or how many pages if the book is not split into chapters.)
After they are finished reading, they will need to complete the task directly across from the dated box. The students can fill this in or parents can record what students say in the box. This gives the students an opportunity to have a meaningful conversation about what they are reading with a purpose.
If the student has another task to complete, I will write it under the time section. Parents can initial anywhere in the box to state their child read aloud to them.
If you have any questions about this log, please send me an email. I appreciate your patience with me figuring out the most effective reading log for my students.
