Computers
The students were so excited to work with our new computers this year. They have really impressed me with how quickly they are picking up on some important computing skills. The students will be using their computers for most of the day. Look at the following list to see some examples of what tasks they will do.

Spelling
Yesterday your child brought home their first spelling list for next week. Spelling pre test will be given on Wednesday of each week. Pretest will be graded together in class. Spelling tests are given every Thursday of each week. This leaves Fridays open for long weekends and parties.
Reading
Third graders will participate in a guided reading/ daily five set up. The students will read with me each day, while participating in a variety of reading workstations as well. Some nights your child will bring home a book or passage to read to you. The students MUST read this ALOUD to you. Your child will also have a reading binder for all of their reading work.Your child will be responsible for bringing the book and binder back and forth each day to school.
STUDENT PLANNERS
Each child received a student planner this year. This is helpful in third grade, because it helps them to take responsibility for their work. Even if they have completed their work here at school, they still need to write it down and then put a check in the box when they are finished. I also ask that a parent signature be in the planner for the next day. We are asking for each child to bring $2.00 to help cover the cost of the planners.
Wordly Wise
This is a vocabulary program that we use to learn new words and apply them to our reading. Your child will be graded on certain assignments and will be required to study for the end of the unit test.
Extra Work Log
Just a reminder, the extra work log is an optional choice each night. It is not required work for third grade. The students will get a log each month if they choose to participate. They can choose any task they want to complete. The class store will be at the end of each month.
Math
The main math focus in third grade is for the students to know their multiplication and division facts. The students will begin this year by learning how multiplication works and memorizing their facts. The students will participate in math groups within our classroom as well as math workstation, where they take learned concepts and practice them. There will not be math homework every night, unless the student doesn’t finish it at school.
